The Basics of Poker

Poker

When playing poker, the objective is to achieve the highest possible hand. This can be achieved with the best possible five of a kind. In many cases, the best possible five of a kind will contain two or more different suits, such as aces and kings. If you are lucky enough to have more than one five of a kind, the higher card will win. Alternatively, you can aim for a hand of four tens and a wild card.

A call in poker means making a wager equal to the last bet or raise. If a player to your right has bet $10 and you have not yet raised it, you can call it and place that same amount of chips into the pot. If there are more than three players in a hand, a player may raise. When the game is over, he can call his or her own bet, but this will cause another player to raise.

In the same hand, two players may have more than one straight flush, and the higher of the two is the winner. A straight is composed of five cards of the same rank, including the ace. When a straight is a higher rank than two pairs, the winner will be the player with the highest pair. The best five-card hand is a straight, and is known as a Royal Flush. If two players have a straight, they will split the pot, but in case of a tie, the highest card will win.
