The Different Types of Slot Machines

Originally slot machines were mechanical devices, with reels that used springs and gears to spin. But modern slot machines are electronically programmed, using a random number generator and computer-generated symbols.

There are different types of slot machines, with different themes, symbols and payouts. The first is a classic three-reel machine, with up to five paylines. Traditional three-reel machines are usually found in bars and casinos, but they are also available online.

The second type is a multi-coin/multi-line slot machine, where players can choose the number of coins they want to bet on each line. This will increase the odds of winning.

There are also bonus events, which occur regularly. They can be pick’em events, bonus wheels, free spins and other extras. The payout for these events must be included in the overall return.

The third type is a banked bonus. Banked bonuses are events where players collect symbols. This is typically aligned with the theme of the game. The results of these events are randomly generated, but the programmer can build them into the odds to make some of them more likely to occur.

The final type is a video slot. These are typically equipped with HD screens and animated graphics. Most slots have themes, such as lucky sevens, fruits, and bells. These may have as many as 1024 paylines.

Unlike other forms of gambling, slot machines are not regulated in the U.S. The law requires them to work theoretically. That means the probability of each outcome cannot be known by looking outside the machine.
